D067 News / Committee / Bio - Tom Cochran

State Rep. Tom Cochran is serving his third term representing Michigan’s 67th House District, which includes Mason, Stockbridge, Leslie, Webberville, Williamston, Dansville, Holt, Onondaga and South Lansing.

Tom was born and raised in Lansing, and he is a proud graduate of Everett High School and Siena Heights University. He has worn many hats over the years, but he has always endeavored to serve the people of his community. Tom has served on numerous community boards over his lifetime, including the Tri-County Emergency Medical Control Authority Board, the Ingham County 911 Board, the Ingham County Elder Death Review Team, the Greater Lansing Labor Council and the City of Lansing Police and Fire Pension Board.

Kathy, his wife of 30 years, is a teacher at the Ingham Intermediate School District Career Center. Together, they have raised three sons in Ingham County schools. After serving for 10 years on the Mason School Board, Tom has made quality, affordable education a priority.

Tom has a strong local work history as a 29½ -year veteran of the Lansing City Fire Department. His career began as a firefighter and paramedic, where he served as union representative and president of the International Association of Fire Fighters Lansing Local 421 for 10 years. He worked his way up the ranks of the department until he obtained the position of fire chief. As a result of his experience as chief, he saw firsthand the impact that tough economic times have on employees, their employers, and the families connected to both. When economic hardship hit his department, he agreed to cut his own pay in order to help keep firefighters employed. This experience emboldened him to run for state representative, where he could have the opportunity to serve as a voice for public safety officers, educators and middle-class families.

You may run into Tom around the community serving as a volunteer with the Mason Optimist Club, counting the homeless as a part of “Homeless Connect,” or delivering meals to the elderly every Friday with “Meals on Wheels.”
